Abstract
In Brazil, sheep farming plays a social and economic role, especially in the northeast region, where a large part of the country's sheep population is concentrated. Small farms support the majority of the livestock and are therefore more susceptible to the entry of pathogens into the flock due to structural, sanitary and financial issues. Brucella ovis is the main cause of reproductive problems in rams and ewes; in males, it can cause chronic epididymitis and orchitis. In females, it induces abortion, risk of perinatal death and weight loss in newborn lambs. The objective of this study is to understand the form of transmission, the survival mechanisms in the host and the prevention methods of Brucella ovis in order to try to contain its advances in sheep farming. A literature review was carried out in databases such as PubMed and SCOPUS, SciELO, LILACS and the Virtual Health Library (BVS), focusing on studies on Brucella ovis in sheep, published in Portuguese, English or Spanish. After screening 120 articles, 50 were analyzed to summarize findings on prevalence, diagnosis, and management of the infection. Preventive strategies, such as strategic separation of sheep by age group during non-reproductive periods, can be considered to contain the spread of this bacterial infection. The search for preventive measures and combat against this agent is challenging and requires further studies and research to try to eliminate it from the herd. Finally, further research to find an appropriate treatment for infected animals is essential.
