Abstract
Introduction: Drowning accidents are one of the main causes of death and serious injuries in children and adolescents. Pediatrics are particularly vulnerable to these accidents due to curiosity, lack of experience, and limited supervisory skills. Objective: To analyze the incidence, characteristics and risk factors associated with drowning accidents in children and adolescents through a literature review on the most up-to-date knowledge. Methodology: This is an integrative review of the literature whose search took place in the PUBMED and SCIELO databases after the establishment of the Health Science Descriptors (DeCS) including articles published in 2020 to 2024 that cover the theme and objectives of the study. Results anddiscussion: There are important drownings with a worse prognosis in children under 5 years of age and submersion time longer than 5 minutes, highlighting the importance of continuous supervision in aquatic environments and education on water safety. Conclusion: The research carried out through a literature review on updated knowledge regarding drowning accidents allowed the development of knowledge about a common pediatric emergency in emergency care and a preventable cause of death in patients.
