Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Cancer, with high global mortality and a significant impact on mental health and quality of life, requires multidisciplinary care to address the psychological, emotional, and physical challenges associated with diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVE: To analyze how the psychological and emotional challenges associated with cancer diagnosis and treatment impact OQOL. METHODOLOGY: This is an integrative review carried out through the online database of the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE). The following Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) were used: “Quality of life”, “Oncology”, “Palliative care”, “Anxiety”, “Psychological stress”, “Patient care team”, “Psychological adaptation” and “Psychological distress”, combining them with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Inclusion criteria were added: full articles, published in English and Portuguese, between 2020 and 2024 and that were in accordance with the theme. Exclusion criteria: incomplete articles, theses, abstracts, monographs, conference proceedings, articles outside the time frame and those that did not correspond to the proposed theme. A total of 126 articles were found and 12 were included in the review. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Effective oncological management requires humanized care, individualized pain control and psychosocial support to improve the quality of life of patients. Strategies such as psychotherapy, physical exercise and health education are essential to reduce physical and emotional suffering, promoting adherence to treatment. CONCLUSION: The research proved that strategies such as psychotherapy, social support and multidisciplinary approaches improve the quality of life of cancer patients, reducing anxiety, depression and emotional suffering.
