Abstract

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications during pregnancy, characterized by glucose intolerance that develops or is first identified during this period. This article aims to review and analyze the impacts of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus on maternal health. This study was conducted as a literature review, focusing on the impact of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) on maternal health. The bibliographic search was performed in the following electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Virtual Health Library (BVS). Results and discussion: The literature review revealed a series of significant impacts of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) on maternal health, highlighting both immediate complications and long-term implications. The prevalence of GDM varies between 1% and 14%, depending on the diagnostic criteria and the population studied. Conclusion: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) significantly impacts maternal health, both during pregnancy and in the long term. Women with GDM have a higher risk of developing obstetric complications, such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, and are more likely to require a cesarean section.
