Epidemiological Profile of Diabetes Mellitus Cases in the Federal District between 2020 and 2024

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus consists of a chronic metabolic syndrome derived from problems in the metabolism of the hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas, insulin. Diabetes is classified into two main groups: type 1 diabetes (DM1) and type 2 diabetes (DM2). In addition, there are gestational diabetes (GDM) and MODY diabetes. Therefore, the objective of this epidemiological study is to characterize the epidemiological profile of morbidity due to Diabetes Mellitus in the Federal District between 2020 and 2024, searching for the number of cases related to the variables available in the Hospital Information System. This is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. Data were collected regarding the following variables: municipality of care, year of care, age group, and sex. Based on “epidemiology”, “diabetes”, “morbidity” in the access databases of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and Google Scholar platforms. According to the data, 8,454 hospitalizations for diabetes were observed in the period analyzed, 24% were performed in 2023, 53% in men and 20% in the age group of 50 to 59 years. Therefore, the epidemiological profile of morbidity due to Diabetes Mellitus in the Federal District between 2020 and 2024 was 8,454 hospitalizations, the majority of which were men, occurring mainly in 2022, in the age group of 50 to 59 years.
